People & Hobbies

A hobby is a happy medium between a passion and an obsession.
— Honoré de Balzac

As I have already mentioned, I avoid photographing people. I am uncomfortable telling people how to pose, and I have difficulty capturing their personalities. My best bet is to stay put and sneak a few (thousand) candid shots when everyone seems to have forgotten about me.

This approach requires patience, but technology also helps. I love taking photos using the app on my phone to control the camera. This way, my camera's lens and I don't need to look in the same direction. People change as soon as you point a camera at them. They look like they do in their Instagram photos and not how they look in real life. Unless you are making a photo for a passport or a LinkedIn profile, any frame with the subject staring directly into the camera is a wasted shot. Well, okay, maybe I’m being too categorical. Sometimes it works.

The simple trick to photographing people is to take many, many pictures. Sometimes their eyes will be open; other times, they will be shut. And sometimes, one eye will be opened, and the other one will be closed. So it’s best to cover all eventualities using your fancy mirrorless camera to its fullest: data storage is cheap nowadays.
